Summer days are winding down and, for GP practices, the transition from the warm, cheery days of summer to the routine of autumn can sometimes feel like a challenge. It’s not post-summer blues but rather the late-summer lull that affects us all! The good news is, there are plenty of ways to motivate your team, and yourself, during this period. Here are some tips to help your practice thrive as the leaves change:

Set Clear Goals and Expectations

Start by reevaluating your practice’s goals for the rest of the year. Be transparent with your team about these objectives and what’s expected of them. Clarity can be a powerful motivator, helping everyone see the bigger picture and understand their role in achieving it.

Acknowledge Achievements

Celebrate the successes, no matter how small. Recognise the hard work your team put in during the busy summer months. Acknowledgment boosts morale and reminds everyone that their contributions are valued.

Offer Learning and Development Opportunities

This can be a great time to invest in professional growth. Encourage your team to expand their knowledge and skills through training or workshops. This not only benefits them but also enhances the overall capabilities of your practice.

Emphasise Work-Life Balance

Support your team in maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Encourage them to take breaks, use their annual leave, and recharge. A well-rested team is a motivated team.

Encourage Open Communication

Create an environment where team members feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and concerns. Encourage open dialogues and be receptive to feedback. This not only helps address issues promptly but also fosters a sense of ownership and involvement.

I do a fortnightly staff bulletin with updates and info, even on the wider picture like PCN’s and CCG priorities etc. so everyone feels in the loop. Any time we consider implementing a change we involve the staff – ask them their thoughts, get them involved in working groups and ask for feedback.

Positivity is contagious. Share success stories, patient testimonials, or any positive news related to your practice. A positive atmosphere can be a powerful motivator!
Remember, the Late Summer Lull is just a phase. By implementing these strategies, you can keep your team engaged and motivated throughout the year, ensuring your practice continues to provide exceptional care to your patients.
